Archaeologists unveiled on Tuesday the discovery of one of the treasures of the United Kingdom’s iron age, the 2000-year-old treasury, saying that the 2000-year-old treasure could transform the perceptions of ancient Britain.
The experts said that the “Helsonby Hoard” found in Yorkshire, in the north of England, is remarkable for its richness and variety, with ceremonial spears, tanks and horses of horses decorated with coral of the Mediterranean.
He also questions the idea that northern England was less rich than the South, said specialists, and could lead to a reassessment of the region’s status and links with Europe.
“It is one of the largest traces of metallurgy in the Iron Age ever found in Great Britain,” the head of the Archeology department of the University of Durham told AFP.
An enthusiast of metal detector found the treasure in a field near the village of Melsony in 2021, but Moore said that the discovery was made public on Tuesday until a legal process to determine the value of the treasury.
It is now estimated at £ 254,000 (around $ 329,000), according to a joint declaration by the British Museum, the History England and the University of Durham.
After the detectoralist Peter Heads reported the location, archaeologists discovered more than 800 articles in two trenches and crossed the crosspieces using X -ray technology.
“There are so many things in the deposit,” said Moore.
Off -competition discoveries included harness pieces decorated with red coral and colored glass, and 28 iron wheels of large tanks or wagons, which resemble artefacts found in Europe.
