Manila, Philippines – Javee Mocon showed why Nlex made the right decision to keep him on Friday during the Philippine PBA Cup at Philsports Arena.
The road warriors relied on Mocon, which had just signed a one-year contract extension, to improve at 6-1 and take solo lessons in the classification.
“(Our) moral is very, very high,” said Mocon. “The coach Jong (Uichico) is satisfied to say the least, with the way we are in a team. We are happy at 6-1 but at the end of the day, coach Jong wants to build a foundation that will extend to the next conferences.”
Mocon finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, built on an effective shooting clip of 50% – just one day after his signature ceremony at the Balintawak Nlex office, with team governor Ronald Dulatre, team leader Virgil Villavicecio and Uichico.
Things were not always smooth for Mocon after being exchanged from Phoenix in September of last year, but his constant effort convinced the team officials to bring him another year.
“When I spoke to the coach Jong and the Boss (before), they were 50-50 to signal me because they were still trying to feel if I am compatible with the team, but from the pre-season to this conference, I work for the minutes,” said the product of San Beda.
“In Phoenix, I had a few performances. So now, in this conference, I try to prove something-that we can be one of the best teams,” he added.
Dulatre, for his part, sees that the effort translates on the ground.
“After a year with us, Javee really begins to flourish in one of our leaders. He blends well into the system and intensifies when we need him. We are looking forward to seeing what he can show in the coming seasons,” said Dulatre.
Mocon is on average 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game at the current conference entirely-Filipino.
Nlex hopes to take his momentum on Sunday against Meralco, also in Philsports Arena.
