Iran increases highly enriched uranium production: IAEA

Tehran: Iran has intensified its highly enriched uranium production in recent months, according to a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) seen on Saturday by AFP.

The tensions between Iran and the United Nations nuclear custody have evolved several times since an agreement in 2015 reducing the Tehran nuclear program in exchange for relief of the sanctions has collapsed.

The latest AEAA report comes as Tehran continues delicate negotiations with the United States on its nuclear program.

He said in his quarterly report that he was “seriously fear” that Iran had an estimated amount of 408.6 kilograms enriched up to 60% in May 17, up 133.8 kg from the last report in February.

Uranium enriched up to 60 pc fissile purity is close to the level of around 90% necessary for atomic weapons. According to the IAEA, Tehran is the only non -nuclear weapon state to enrich uranium at 60pc.

Iran has always denied seeking a nuclear weapon.

In a separate detailed report, the IAEA criticized Tehran’s “less than satisfactory” cooperation on its meticulous examination of the Iranian nuclear program.

“While Iran continues to cooperate with the agency on questions of implementation of routine guarantees, in several respects (…) its cooperation with the agency was far from satisfactory,” said the report.

He specifically notes the lack of progress of Tehran in the explanation of nuclear materials found on unsuccessful sites.

“In particular, Iran has not responded several times or has not provided technically credible answers, the agency’s questions and disinfected the locations as indicated in this report, which has hampered the agency’s verification activities.”

Donald Trump unilaterally removed the United States from a historic 2015 agreement with Tehran during his first mandate as president. The agreement had exchanged the relief of sanctions for the limits of the Iranian nuclear program.
