The Grand Duncan Ferguson of Everton revealed that he had once prevented the legend of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, from joining Newcastle United. He said he had urged Rooney to wait for the Red Devils progress, who came to call soon.
Speaking on the Podcast Stick to Football, Ferguson said that Newcastle United was interested in reporting Rooney in 2004. He explained how he had managed to convince the Tour-teenager not to jump on the offer. He said (via Mirror):
“He was going to go to Newcastle, and I advised him to see this move, before going to Manchester United. I told her that Newcastle was a big club, but if United and Sir Alex Ferguson wanted you, you would better go.
“Alan (Shearer) and Wayne were the best attackers with whom I played. Wayne was only young at the time, but you could see where he was going to go – he was a leading player. I was trying to turn away from Wayne – he was younger than me, and he looked for me as if I was his hero. I was not worried that I was not the best model.
Wayne Rooney then joined Manchester United for reported costs of just under 26 million pounds sterling and went to club legend. He scored 253 goals in 559 games for them before returning to Everton in 2017.
Wayne Rooney admitted he wanted Newcastle United Move but waited for Manchester United
Wayne Rooney was also on the Podcast Stick to Football and admitted that he was ready to join Newcastle United. He added that the moving option at Manchester Unite came before Euro 2004 and that changed his mind.
He said (via Mirror):
“I knew it (joining United) was an option before Euro 2004. I knew that Manchester United wanted to sign me. Everton really had trouble for money at the time and I discovered that they were listening to the offers of people too. They tried to push me to sign for Chelsea because they were going to pay the most money. Sign.
“It was 40 minutes from my house, where I also grew up and it was a perfect fit for me. United wanted to wait a year, until the following year, but Newcastle entered the talks with Everton and with myself. I went too far so. I couldn’t wait a year, I couldn’t stay another year in Everton, so I was ready to go to Newcastle.”
Wayne Rooney continued to play for Derby County and DC United before calling her to leave her player career. He managed these two clubs, as well as Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, but failed to impress.
