Five skiers were found dead near the Rimpfischhorn mountain in the southwest of Switzerland, near the Italian border, the authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Emergency services launched a research operation on Saturday after two skiers said they were spotting a set of abandoned skis at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters. The rescue teams, supported by helicopters and ground staff, later discovered the bodies of the AdlergletCher glacier.

According to the Swiss diffuser RTS, three of the victims were found about 500 meters from the location of the skis, while the other two were located on a small snowy crest of approximately 200 meters.

The identity of the victims has not yet been released and formal identification is underway. The regional prosecutor’s office in Canton Valais said that an investigation was opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
