Capas, Tarlac – Alyana Nicolas appreciates the fact that his performance rises to the competition that surrounds him.
Motivated by an equally determined rival, Nicolas released four meters for the first time in six years to keep his female pole jump title at the end of the Philippin ICTSI athletics championships.
“I have not struck it (4 meters) for so long, so I’m proud of myself to have done it in the right time at the right time,” said the Discovery Sports Filam which cleaned most of the same competition organized by the Philippine Athletic Track and Field Association (Patafa) in 2019 in Illagan, Isabela.
Agged by the crowd of the New Clark City Athletics Stadium, Nicolas recorded 4.0 m in his first attempt, beating the silver medalist Amy Christensen, who jumped 3.85 m.
“I must thank Amy for pushing me. I know that there is still a lot of things in me and I really can’t wait for the rest of the season,” said Nicolas, the best nation post vaulter.
Wet conditions
The closing of the four-day meeting with style supported by Cel Logistics and the Philippine Sports Commission was the MVP Hussein Loraña of season 86 of the UAAP and the gold medalist of the Southeast Asian Games Sarah Dequinan.
Despite the wet conditions of the arena which also welcomed the Games SEA 2019, Loraña moved away from the last 200 m to govern the race of 800 male in 1: 51.86.
Dequinan amassed 4,441 points in seven events to win the title in the female heptathlon on Antonette Jay Aguillon from the Extreme Eastern University (3,651).
Nicolas and Christensen confirmed the participation in the Patafa Pole Vault Challenge organized Tuesday by the celebrity of the male pole Ej Obiena at Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite.
Nicolas, a former California State University Northridge, failed in his three attempts to clear the 4.10 m entrance standard for the next Asian athletics championships in Gumi, South Korea, from May 27 to 31.
According to Patafa president, Terry Capistrano, a total of 31 athletes were included in the auction list to qualify for the Asian championships, but they could not cement their places by respecting the qualification standard in their respective events.
“I tried to jump 4.10 and I was quite confident that I could get it. I took a lot of jumps today, so the heat withdrew me a lot,” said Nicolas. Inq
