Manila, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas is back from basketball of the boys from the UAAP high school after 24 years.
The Tiger Cubs obtained the championship of season 87 with a victory of 83-77 in extension of 83-77 against the National School of Nazareth University Thursday at Filooil Ecoil Center.
It was the first UST title since season 64 in 2001 at the time of Jun Cortez. This championship also marks its 12th in the general classification, making school the second most successful program in the history of boys from the UAAP boys.

The victory also finished a double gilded for UST after the groaned junior tigresses won the female title last week. This is the first time that a school has won the two high school basketball championships since women’s basketball has been introduced in season 82.
Henu Iñigo head coach, who is now part of an exclusive group of coaches with UAAP and NCAA titles, praised the resilience of his team.

“My goal as a coach is really to help as many young players as possible to reach the following level,” he said. “I’m going to fill this whole story with the children we have guided – that’s what really matters.”
The series was decided with an average winning margin of only 5.6 points per game. Nuns took match 1, 77-70, before UST rebounded in match 2 with a victory of 89-85.

In match 3, UST led by 17 points, but Nuns organized a furious rally in the fourth quarter. The Jid Locsin franc throw and the migs palanca putback forced overtime at 74 years.

Kane propelled with 28 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks, winning the MVP honors of the finals. Buenaflor fought offensively, drawing 5 out of 16, but compensated with 15 rebounds and six assists.
Palanca led nuns with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Okowe experienced a dominant performance of 23 points and 24 shots before getting worse.
This marks the second consecutive finalist of Nuns after losing against Adamson in another three -game finals series last season. Several key players, including Akowe, Palanca and Locsin, will graduate from the program.
