LONDON:
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made his first official visit to Great Britain on Thursday for the first time in a decade where he had interviews with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Advisor.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Wang that he wanted “coherent and respectful” relations between their country, when he abandoned the planned meeting between Wang and his national security advisor Jonathan Powell, told journalists -Starmer spokesperson.
“He underlined his intention to build a coherent and respectful relationship between the United Kingdom and China … including the deepening of cooperation on trade, investment and other areas of mutual profit,” said the spokesperson.
“He reiterated that the United Kingdom will always engage in the fields where our opinions differ, within the framework of the stable and regular commitment, this government is committed to maintaining with China.”
British Foreign Minister David Lammy said he had discussed Wang International Security, the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. But Lammy said he would continue to challenge China on the imprisonment of the Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Magnat, Jimmy Lai, human rights and the sanction of British parliamentarians.
The Labor Government, in power in Great Britain since July, has improved links with China one of its main foreign policy objectives, after a period when relations have plunged at their lowest level since decades under successive conservative governments.
